The question I get asked most often is: How do you write a song?
The answer is that I have no idea. Furthermore, I’d go so far as to say that, if you entertain any ambitions of songwriting success, I’m the last person you should ask.
My songs fit no specific genre and I follow no formula. I simply hum and strum until a tune arrives out of the ether and forms pictures in my head. Those pictures become the basis of the lyrics.
I don’t think in terms of simple, repetitive lyrical hooks, which most often define successful songs. Ubiquitous, chart-topping ‘feet in gear mind in neutral’ songs are not my strength. My aim, such as it is, is to write words that matter — at least to me. Sometimes narrations, sometimes messages and sometimes simple musings.
Occasionally, I indulge in poetic nonsense. Weaving words to conjure phantasmagoric images. ‘ELEGANT DREAMS’ is a piece of such nonsense. It’s one of many songs I have recorded but never released. I hope it paints some nice pictures in your head.
